How SUNY Cortland transformed its campus store operations with resero Retail Technologies

At SUNY Cortland, where campus pride runs deep and student life is vibrant, the campus store plays a vital role in connecting the community. But for Kimberly Boyce, Operations Manager at SUNY Cortland, managing the store wasn't always smooth sailing, especially when their previous retail system fell short.

Outgrowing the Old System

The journey to find a better retail solution began when SUNY Cortland was transitioned to a cloud-based version of their existing system. Rather than solving long-standing issues, the change created new ones.

“The price of the system and the support we received just didn’t match the value,” Kimberly recalls. “It quickly became clear that we needed to find another provider.”

A breaking point came during one of their biggest sales weekends. Reporting and inventory tracking failed, leaving staff unable to reconcile actual stock with the system’s records. The lack of accurate data meant conducting an unscheduled second inventory count within a year—without the support they needed.

“We just couldn’t rely on the system anymore,” Kimberly explains. “It was costing us time, money, and peace of mind.”

With eyes on expanding operations—including the possible return of a campus Convenience Store that accepts dining dollars—SUNY Cortland sees resero as a key player in their continued growth.

The resero team welcomes Eric Browning

I am pleased to announce that Eric Browning has joined the resero Retail Technologies team as our Director of Business Development; starting officially on April 1, Eric has already been working behind the scenes to get acclimated to the team and has jumped in feet first.

Eric comes to us after a year-long sabbatical from the higher ed retail industry; they say once you start working in higher ed there is no escape, and Eric has proven this. Eric has almost 30 years of experience in the campus store industry starting with his work at the NEIT Bookstore in 1995 and wrapping up there in 2000 as the store manager. Many of you may know him best from his 20 years at MBS in various capacities culminating in Sales and Regional Manager positions or more recently during his two-year stint at Oracle NetSuite.

Eric has been an advocate of independent college stores throughout his career, serving on the CSNE (now CSA-NYS) board in various capacities for a number of years, and logging close to 1 million road miles calling solely upon institutional stores.

We are excited to have Eric’s expertise join the team and look forward to the continued growth of our store partners using CampusCloud and SmartLockers.

The Jets Store has taken off with resero CampusCloud!

Jackson College delivers approximately 90% of all required textbooks in a digital format directly through the LMS, but that doesn’t mean the campus store closed; it just transformed. With a standard selection of a few print books, rental items, and course kits along with the standard swag and school supplies, the Jets Store also has a large selection of convenience items - snacks, meals, hygiene items, household needs, and even refrigerators. It’s all about meeting students where they are and helping all students be successful. Part of that commitment to student success is fulfilled through the Jackson College Hunger-Free Campus initiative which “will provide hungry students food to eat and some basic necessities. Students who self-identify can receive emergency assistance coupons with non-cash value of $10 to meet food, hygiene or household needs.” And the Jets Store is a central part of that mission.

Using resero CampusCloud, the store staff can remove the stigma surrounding food insecurity and process a hunger-free transaction seamlessly alongside traditional transactions; CampusCloud will even automatically determine what is and isn’t covered in the program and immediately provide feedback to the cashier to prompt for a split tender payment.

Spring 2023 Show Season

The slow-down from the beginning of the term can mean only one thing – spring show season is here . It’s not as good as spring itself arriving, but it does give us some of the same warm feelings; we’re excited to be back in person to see you at 3 more shows this spring!

We’ve already had a successful journey to upstate New York where I joined the New York State Auxiliary Services Association conference at the beginning of January where we had the opportunity to network with some of the greatest Auxiliary Services minds in the industry. There were a lot of fantastic conversations about how CampusCloud and SmartLockers can integrate into current service models as well as lead the transition to new and exciting service models as the campus store, campus retail, and Auxiliary Services, as a whole, continue to evolve.

Next up you can see us (Lara Konick in particular) at the ICBA conference in Las Vegas ; we’ll be in the Specialty Zone at Table #1 on the 7 ^th and 8 ^th of February . We know that the ICBA team keeps you busy during the conference with a packed schedule of learning sessions and business meetings, but we’d love to see you stop by – don’t be a sucker!! Also, we’ll have some super awesome suckers to give you too. Even if you just have a second to stop by after a coffee break, between meetings, we can hook you up with a sucker, some tchotchkes, and great reference material to review the benefits of CampusCloud and SmartLockers.

After ICBA, we'll see you at CAMEX 100 in New Orleans where you’ll be able to find us in in a number of different areas of the show; and you’ll get to see me in addition to Lara for this one! First up we’ll be part of the Campus Retail Systems discussion during the Campus Store Dialogues session on March 6 ; we’ll have a short presentation about the benefits of CampusCloud and SmartLockers after which we’ll stick around to participate in a roundtable. During the trade show on March 7 & 8, you will find us in Booth 372 where we’ll have CampusCloud and SmartLockers set up and can highlight the super sweet seamless integration between systems; BOPIL anybody?! (Buy Online Pick Up In Locker for the uninitiated). As always, we’ll have swag and some marketing materials to hand out in the booth, and new this year, SUCKERS!!!! (not calling you a sucker…or us suckers…but we’ll have lollipops). Lastly, on March 9 at 9:30am you can hear Lara moderate a panel discussion about the Keys to Successful System Migration with your peers Kim Madden and Steven Westenbroek…and probably snag some more lollipops too.

The last show we’ll be attending the spring is the NEBC trade show on March 16 & 17 at the Marriott Hartford Windsor Airport Hotel; more details to come as the show schedule is finalized. Join Lara and our traveling band of suckers along with 150 of your closest friends in Windsor, CT for the “speed dating” presentation and table-top trade show.

As 2022 comes to a close, resero is excited to announce the launch of our new website. This website represents the future of resero Retail Technologies, which will continue to invest in innovation.

Our team understands the role of campus stores in the mission of higher ed. Our website aims to create a clearer message with better resources and a network for our CampusCloud community.

We hope this new website provides you with all the information about our company and products. We look forward to continuing our work with campuses across North America to help them thrive in an ever-changing retail landscape.

What's New?

The website has an entirely new look and feel. It is modern and sleek, designed to showcase the latest and greatest resero has to offer.

In addition to a fresh new look, the website also includes a User Group feature. This will allow users to log in and connect with other campus stores using CampusCloud. The User Group is a great way to learn more about how to use the software to its full potential and get tips and tricks from other users.

We are also focusing on providing resources to our community. Moving forward, the resero website will provide articles aimed at helping campus store managers navigate the ever-evolving campus retail landscape.

The decision to launch a new website was driven by our desire to better represent our product's current state. The product is constantly iterating, innovating, and evolving.

Is Cloud-based more future-proofed?

How does cloud-based computing make a retail system more “future proof?"

Beyond the scaling, cost and security advantages of an on-demand, cloud platform like Amazon Web Services (AWS), going to a cloud-based solution has some significant inherent advantages over a partially or completely on-premise system. With the cloud-based solution, software resides in a single, multi-tenant instance—there’s only one version in use for all stores . Your store can’t be out of step with the latest version and you don’t have to worry about physically updating an on-premise server or clients. At resero we also find this fact has the knock-on benefit of encouraging a cohesive user community as everyone uses the exact same system and has a shared commitment to its success.

Equally important are the advantages a true cloud-based system offers for the end user, both store staff and customers. A cloud-based retail solution should utilize a generic browser as the interface for all system functions . In other words, all you need is the web browser you’re using right now to read this post! No client software to install and an interface that users are already familiar with. Beware solutions that support a browser for some functions and a proprietary interface for others or need a local SQL server: they are obviously not fully cloud-based and leave your store facing either out-of-date server software or the need to update client devices one by one or both!

This quote above is akin to the situation that many stores find themselves in right now; what will you do to find your new cheese?

The first step to finding your new cheese is to recognize that your old cheese doesn’t cut it anymore. Maybe it’s stuck in the back and refuses to move forward. Maybe it’s bound together with other old cheese that can’t be separated. Or maybe what you thought was new cheese was really just old cheese with a new wrapper. Regardless of your situation, what’s really needed is to take a step back, look around, assess the situation, and realize that what you’ve got is stinky old cheese – and not the good stuff.

Your old cheese isn’t going to be the same as everybody else’s, we all have our own cheese and our own way to address it, and the way we handle it makes all the difference.

Sometimes your old cheese is the technology you are using. Sometimes your old cheese is an onerous agreement that forces you into a rut. Sometimes your old cheese is something that is just still around because you’re afraid to throw it out. Regardless, old cheese is old cheese -- learn to recognize it.
